Review Of "Memories Of Home"
By Johnny Pearce-"Bluegrass Now" Magazine
The Stevens Family, from Berkeley Springs, WV. consist of mom, dad and six children. Like many family groups they started out singing in churches, performing mostly gospel music. This project, their fifth album, is the first to include secular bluegrass, which is a departure from the gospel music that predominates their other recordings. J.W. and Nancy Stevens head up the family and four children, Laura, Becky, Luke, and Ben join them on this album of six song about family and home. Highlights on this one include the John Denver classic, "Country Roads",presented with close family harmony. Another enjoyable tune is the RhondaVincent/Terry Herd hard driving composition, "Kentucky Borderline." All family members listed share vocals, but the sparse liner notes omit details regarding the vocalist. Memories of Home is certainly enjoyable tradtional bluegrass, featuring close harmonies and I'm sure their future releases will include more than six songs. The present sampler is an excellent introduction to the Stevens Family.

The Stevens Family, Their vocals are tight, diverse, and concise. And they are all excellent musicians bringing a powerful instrumental sound to the fore. And when you combine the two the only word that can be used to describe it is “WOW”!

I sensed dedication, sincerity, and real love for the Lord and people as well as for bluegrass music itself.

“ I recently listened to The Stevens Family all-gospel CD
“Just One Touch”, and it’s apparent that they love music and love to perform it. You can hear the conviction in every song that was played or sang and I’m sure that it has been a blessing and inspiration to all who have listened to it. One of my favorite songs on the CD is ‘I Know Who Holds Tomorrow’, a song I used to sing years ago. I have not had the opportunity to listen to ‘Memories of Home’ as of this writing, but I’m sure it contains many magical moments just as their all-gospel recording does and I sincerely hope that you enjoy the songs contained here.”
